About the song

The first sample video for my Bluegrass Guitar Essentials I’d like to introduce you to is for a song entitled “Wilder Mountain Coal.”  This is the title track for the album of the same name by the band I play Bluegrass Guitar for called Wilder Mountain. In this video, you’ll learn how I approached this solo using one of my favorite tunings: Drop D!  This is a very popular tuning utilized by such Bluegrass Guitar LEGENDS as Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton, and Dan Crary.

I’m sure you’ll enjoy learning how to use this tuning for your own soloing as well. Tammy Melton, our Banjo player, wrote the lyrics and I composed the solo seen above. You can learn more information about our second album, Wilder Mountain Coal, in the video above.

The Legend of Captain John

About the song

The 2nd sample video for my Bluegrass Guitar Essentials is for the solo to a song I wrote many years ago that many of my YouTube audience is already familiar with entitled “The Legend of Captain John.”

When recording this song for our second album “Wilder Mountain Coal” I decided I wanted to add a heart-felt solo that just wasn’t present on this recording on our first album “Bluer Shade of Green.”

In this video, I’ll show you how I approached this solo using one of the most popular chord shapes in Bluegrass Guitar: C!  I sing this song in E flat, which is what Tony Rice sings “Church Street Blues” in—a major inspiration for the picking style of this song.

This solo uses many stylish and “finesse” type licks and phrases with hammer-ons, pull-offs, and smooth, lengthy slides.  These techniques are part of what I feel are the “essential” techniques most Bluegrass guitar Legends like Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton, Steve Kaufman, David Grier, Kenny Smith, and many others use in their playing which I go over extensively in Bluegrass Guitar Essentials.

Lonely Tonight

About the song

Welcome to the 3rd sample video for my Bluegrass Guitar Essentials course.  This video is for the solo to another song I wrote entitled “Lonely Tonight.”  This was the first tune I wrote that I considered a “Waltz” tune.

This is a great tune that talks about a guy who’s been abandoned by his true love.  He only wanted to live the familiar dream of marrying his true love, but never envisioned her leaving and his whole world come crumbling apart.  Fortunately, he has some friends who tell him how foolish it is to keep holding onto something that’s clearly not coming back.

This video features a lesson for the solo of the song which will help you break free from the “comfort zone” of staying near the first 5 frets.  It involves some big slides, melodic double stops, and a simple way to lead into a key modulation at the end.  If you listen carefully you can hear the emotion that I tried hard to squeeze out of every note.

The techniques in “Lonely Tonight” are more examples of what I feel are the “essential” techniques most Bluegrass guitar Legends like Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton, Steve Kaufman, David Grier, Kenny Smith, and many others use in their playing which I go over extensively in Bluegrass Guitar Essentials.

3 Essential Bluegrass Licks

About the video

The 4th sample video for my Bluegrass Guitar Essentials course is a change of pace.  Up to now, I’ve been showing you some solos that convey the essence of what Bluegrass Guitar Essentials is all about.  But most people know a few songs and fiddle tunes and what they really want to learn is more licks.

That’s where this video comes in.  In my course I cover a ton of licks for the keys of G, C, and D—what I feel are the 3 essential keys for learning Bluegrass guitar.  To give you a sample of the quality of licks that I share in the course, I’ve decided to include some of them in a sample video so you’ll be able to use them in your own playing.

The licks I go over involve one of my personal favorite techniques that’s also one of the most used by many Bluegrass guitar Legends such as Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton, Clarence White, and David Grier.  It’s called the first fret pull-off, and I know you’ll find it useful in your own playing because I myself have found this technique to be invaluable.

As a bonus, I also share some essential tips for playing better Bluegrass guitar that everyone—whether you’re a Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced player—can apply to their own playing styles and instantly sound more professional and become better at their left and right hand coordination.

    1. Aaron, you can find the download link directly below each video for sample vids 1-4. Video 5 doesn’t have tabs. Just look for the “Download the tabs for [video title]” and click on it. You can view/save the tabs from there. Sorry for the confusion.
